Eco Long Drop Pit Latrines Uganda

Good evening from the UK.

My name is Murray Kirkham and I am the chairman of the International and foundation committee of my local Lindum Lincoln Rotary Club here in Lincoln, in the UK. We are putting together a proposal to build eco long drop pit latrines for girls and female staff at two schools in south Uganda. We are looking for the best way forward with this initiative and wonder what is the best system available? Can you recommend maybe suppliers that may supply systems and have local knowledge through out Africa? I look forward to your reply.

Henriette is bound to have contacts in Uganda who are familiar with her compost toilet system, as her company caters mainly to working men from the rest of Africa. She has it very well sorted out, would know how to create local businesses around the composting and supply of bins, and she used to be an industrial chemist so she really knows what she is doing with contaminants and how to create composters without the risk of ground water contamination.

In the past I've used a long drop on the farm, a compost toilet with bucket system to compost cycle at home in the city, and a two chamber toilet house during my PDC. I prefer the compost toilet over the long drop and 2 chamber.

The long drop, a hole in the ground, and the 2 chamber consisting of 2 large concrete boxes over which the toilet seat is mounted, favor anaerobic conditions and omit a terrible stench. The long drops on the farm were always surrounded by flies whereas the compost toilet is odourless if managed properly, and only stinks for about 5 minutes when the buckets are emptied before the material is covered. Flies are prevented by covering the heap with newspapers and fine net like shade cloth.

The secret to preventing odours in any setup is the very high carbon to nitrogen ratio through the addition of straw, wood shavings or sawdust, or whatever dry organic material is available, and the presence of air in the compost heap. My Ghanaian friend said that ashes were their method of de-odorizing. Sand does not work.
